  • Overview

    The position of Safety Specialist 8 is located at the Hawthorne Army Depot, near the modest, west central Nevada, “High-desert, mountain-side”, community of Hawthorne. Hawthorne Army Depot, known as “The Largest ammunition storage facility in the world,” is centrally located near the modest community of Hawthorne, Nevada, at the base of 11,000 ft. Mt. Grant and at the south end of large and historical Walker Lake on Highway 95. We are located within a comfortable 1 to 2 hour drive of numerous communities and cities in Northern Nevada and Northern California.     Responsibilities

    • Provide Safety and Loss Control support including auditing, sampling and educating employees to reduce the potential for accident, personal injury or property damage.
    • Perform technical studies involving industrial/explosive safety and/or industrial hygiene to include investigation and audits. Recommend corrective or preventative measures and procedures. Involves technical writing. Perform alternate Radiation Officer duties as needed.
    • Conduct site safety inspections, orientation and safety support to assure compliance with site, local, state and federal laws and guidelines. Establish and/or maintain effective incident reporting and record-keeping system
    • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses (both property and personal) and recommend steps to eliminate or mitigate potential for recurrence.
    • Plan and conduct training in safety, compliance, accident investigation, documentation and reporting procedures and protocols. Plan guidance and training to other members of the Safety Office.
    • Upholds company values (Safety, Diversity, Integrity and Success). Performs other duties of the same or lower level of difficulty as assigned. May be assigned occasional duties of a higher level of difficulty than those listed above. Maintains high ethical standards, overall values of the business, and the Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct to include cooperating during Company investigations; treat all individuals fairly and with respect. Reports potential and known safety and environmental concerns to the appropriate personnel or department.

    Qualifications

    • Knowledge and skills in investigation techniques for specific health and accident hazards.  Basic knowledge of human anatomy. Have the skills and techniques to perform Industrial hygiene sampling.
    • Knowledge of the manufacture, demil, or renovation of munitions or components in accordance with standard operating procedures, the prime contract, DA PAM 385-64, OSHA regulations and other regulations as necessary.
    • Technical writing skills to prepare reports and make recommendations on conditions observed and review and recommend changes, modifications for approval or disapproval. Ability to work in Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc. 
    • Ability to conduct audits and analyze information and effectively report and maintain record keeping system.
    • Must be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, safety training to personnel and Instruction/facilitation/presention skills.
    • Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent required. AA or 2 year diploma in job related technical field or Equivalent job experience strongly preferred.
    • Four (4) years safety experience and/or munitions, explosives, or general industrial safety practices.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain all certifications as required by SOC’s Master Training Plan. Must posses, or successfully complete all initial required radiation certification training within 9 months.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State driver’s license.  Must also be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of government security clearance as well as a clearance through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms and be favorably vetted through the NCIC III System.
    • Must be able to perform work duties routinely, in a safe and effective manner, remaining alert and aware of potential work/safety hazards at all times, and especially alert, while performing safety sensitive duties.
