  • Overview

    The position of Safety Specialist 6 is located at the Hawthorne Army Depot, near the modest, west central Nevada, “High-desert, mountain-side”, community of Hawthorne. Hawthorne Army Depot, known as “The Largest ammunition storage facility in the world,” is centrally located near the modest community of Hawthorne, Nevada, at the base of 11,000 ft. Mt. Grant and at the south end of large and historical Walker Lake on Highway 95. We are located within a comfortable 1 to 2 hour drive of numerous communities and cities in Northern Nevada and Northern California.     Responsibilities

    • Review plans, procedures, methods and facilities involving the manufacture, demil, or renovation of munitions or components or the update of existing munitions to assure the safety of munitions operations.  Develops, recommends and/or coordinates implementation of safety and/or health programs depot wide.
    • Perform periodic on site surveys and inspections of work operations and premises for compliance with safety and/or coordinate health plans and procedures and make recommendations.  Ensure procedures and facilities are adequate to assure safety of personnel and property.  Verify that work is performed in accordance with approved Standing Operating Procedures (SOP).  Prepare reports and make recommendations on conditions observed.  Review and recommend changes, modifications, approval or disapproval of Operating Procedures (SOP).
    • Use established safety methods, standards, regulations, and practices to eliminate or control hazards.  Maintain accident reporting, investigation, and analysis standards to ensure effective corrective action and follow up are provided. Collects accident data for analysis of trends to identify specific areas where additional training is needed. Inspects machinery, equipment and/or structures for compliance with applicable safety and/or health codes and makes recommendation to enhance safety.     
    • Provide apppropriate and professional level safety guidance & expertise to all employees, with emphasis on first line supervisors and planners.
    • Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more areas of safety, e.g., confined space entry, electrical safety, hazardous energy control (LOTO), excavation, MHE, and fall protection. Responsible for reporting potential, reported or known environmental concerns to the Environmental Service.Reports safety/and or health violations and/or deficiencies to appropriate departments. Investigates accidents by interviewing witnesses and/or visiting the site. Reports the result of investigations with recommended corrective action(s) to proper authorities and/or agency staff.  
    • Upholds company values (Safety, Diversity, Integrity and Success). Performs other duties of the same or lower level of difficulty as assigned. May be assigned occasional duties of a higher level of difficulty than those listed above. Maintains high ethical standards, overall values of the business, and the Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct to include cooperating during Company investigations. Reports potential and known safety and environmental concerns to the appropriate personnel or deptartment.

    Qualifications

    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to cultivate strong and collaborative relationships inside and outside the organization. Excellent organizational skills, as demonstrated by the ability to prioritize tasks efficiently and work well under pressure in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
    • Must be able to read and interpret Standard Operating Procedures to be able to prepare reports and make recommendations on conditions observed and review and recommend changes, modifications, approval or disapproval.
    • Ability to work successfully both independently with minimal supervision and as a member or lead of a team.
    • Support data gathering for metrics and performance monitoring of programs to ensure organizational efficiencies and desired outcomes are met and program goals are reached.
    • Minimum of  High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associates degree in a technical field or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in safety operations and/or inspection, incident management or emergency services, required.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain all certifications as required by SOC's Master Training Plan.
    • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State of Nevada drivers license. Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of government security clearance as well as a clearance through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office desired.
