This position is located at the Hawthorne Army Depot. Current SOC collective bargaining agreement employees will be considered for this position first.

  • The closest major city (Reno NV) is located about 2.5 driving hours away.
  • Las Vegas Nevada is located about 5 driving hours away.
  • Our climate compares to that of Afghanistan (dry desert) but the temperatures are not as extreme.

There are many opportunities in our area for outdoor recreation. Yosemite National Park, Mammoth Lakes Ski Resort, and many back-roads for hiking, biking, fishing, ATV/UTV travel are a few of the amenities right out our back door. Hawthorne is a patriotic and peaceful town.



  • Operate diesel electric locomotives and related equipment. Manipulate brake lever, throttle, reverse lever, and air brakes to operate train.
  • Review and interpret train orders or switching orders; comply with operating time table, rule book, and other specific instructions. Complete applicable operations reports.
  • Observe train speed in yard or in cab. Operate in accordance with railroad rules and regulations. Observe stop or lantern signals from brakeman or conductor and move controls to drive locomotive backward or forward to switch and couple cars.
  • Perform pre-trip inspections, exterior assemblies, and parts of locomotive to determine operating condition. Perform general housekeeping duties. Follow Safety Data Sheet guidelines for handling, storage, and disposal of Hazardous Materials. Complete applicable maintenance forms.
  • Relocate forklifts to various storage facilities, production buildings and work sites timley and safely.
  • Uphold company values (Safety, Diversity, Integrity and Success).   Perform other duties of the same or lower level of difficulty as assigned. May be assigned occasional duties of a higher level of difficulty than those listed above. Maintain high ethical standards, overall values of the business, and the Code of Ethics and Standards of Business Conduct to include cooperating during Company investigations; Responsible for reporting potential real environmental concerns to the Environmental Service.


Education: Minimum high school diploma or equivalent required. Technical training and certification in train operations is required.


Length of Experience: One (1) year as a train engineer.


Certifications: Must be able to obtain US Army certification to operate train locomotives and equipment. Must be able to obtain and maintain all certifications as required by SOC's Master Training Plan.


Licenses/Registration: Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid State of Nevada driver’s license. Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate level of security clearance as well as a clearance through the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF).


Other: Must be able to perform work duties, routinely, in a safe and effective manner, remaining alert and aware of potential work/safety hazards at all time, and especially alert while performing safety sensitive duties.
